Ryogae Cho NiChome Development Association website
The Ryogae Cho NiChome Development Association aims to develop a nightlife district and entertainment district in the center of Shizuoka City.
The origin of Ryogae Cho dates back to the era of the Shogun, Ieyasu Tokunaga, in the early 17th Century. Since then, the nature of the stores has changed dramatically. The area is filled with multi-tenant buildings and many restaurants. However, it may seem dangerous at times.
In order to combat this, The Ryogae Cho NiChome Development Association City Development Charter (draft) was established in 2014. As a first step, the city installed streetlights and security cameras to improve the area.
In addition, jazz music concerts were held to encourage people to visit the area, and The Oiran (a high-ranking courtesan before the 19th Century) Parade was held through Ryogae Cho Street.
This website has been created to give information about the district. We aim to introduce the history, charm, distinctive buildings, and shops in the area. We will continue to hold various events as well as activities that are supported by the city. We hope that you will come and join us.

We are trying to create an area where young people can gather during the daytime; an area filled with events, charm, and shops.
We hope that people will want to visit and revisit this beautiful, fashionable area and that it will become known as a city of dreams.
1. Create an area with charm where people can enjoy shops and restaurants.
Promote a positive daytime image of the city.
Open cafes that provide goods such as cakes and attract people who are interested in beauty and health.
Develop a cityscape lined with restaurants that provide gourmet cuisine and shops that will be popular with women.
2. Create an event atmosphere that will make people want to visit and experience various activities.
Produce exciting hands-on experiences, such as event campaigns in an attractive environment by coordinating activities with surrounding businesses.
3. Provide relevant new information by utilizing various means of media.
By using social media, we will introduce shops and provide relevant information through a wide variety of outlets, including community development news and pamphlets.
Community History
Is it true that Ryogae Cho is the birthplace of the Ginza district in Tokyo?
Sumpu was developed by Shogun Ieyasu Tokunaga in the Edo period (1600-1868).
Around 1606, the silver coin mint in Fushimi, Kyoto was moved to the present-day Ryogae Cho. Businesspeople involved in the exchange of gold and silver gathered to trade and the area and businesses prospered. In fact, there is a stone monument in Ryogae Cho 1 Chome that marks the site of the Ginza Government Office. When Shogun Ieyasu Tokunaga retired, Ginza in Sumpu was moved to Kyobashi in Edo( which is now known as Tokyo.) That area was initially named New Ryogae Cho and was later changed to Ginza. It has been suggested that the Edo city plan was modeled after the Sumpu city plan. Therefore, Ginza in Tokyo is said to have been heavily influenced by Ryogae Cho in Shizuoka.

In order to realize our vision for the future of our city, we have set three goals:
1. A safe and secure city for everyone at all times.
The Ryogae Cho NiChome Development Association’s goal is to develop a safe environment for everyone at all times so that anyone can walk around the city and enjoy a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere. We will strive to eliminate incidents that make people uncomfortable including touting, noise, illegal vehicle parking of both bicycles and cars, illegal signs, and the accumulation of excess trash. By doing this, we hope to create a cozy, comfortable environment and a safe and secure community.
2. Dream. A City of your dreams.
We aim to create a city where young people and women can gather during the daytime, filled with events, charm, and shops, so that people will want to visit and revisit this beautiful, fashionable city.
3. Developing the city and educating the people who look after it.
We will create an organized system to educate people about the area and to attract individuals who will be fans of Ryogae Cho in the future.
We will also nurture successors for our association who are passionate about caring for the city in the future.
